This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The overall goal of this COBRE is the development of a sustainable, NIH-funded research center specifically focused on identifying the cultural-behavioral, nutritional, and genetic risk/protective factors associated with chronic diseases and obesity. Accomplishments include:
A. Completion of data collection in three new communities, allowing us to achieve our goal of recruiting 1000 participants.
B. Submission of a successful revised competitive renewal for the COBRE. With this new funding we will expand our work to provide a solid basis for R-series applications by our junior investigators that address minority health disparities.
C. The University of Alaska and University of Alaska Fairbanks provided significant bridge funding to continue the center while awaiting a decision from NCRR on our refunding. This demonstrates the on-going commitment of the university to sustaining the center.
D. Our first investigator has pending R01 funding and is graduating from the COBRE.
E. Initiation of the recruitment for a nutrition faculty member.
F. New investigators already have IRB approvals for their subprojects, providing them with access to communities earlier than in the first grant. This should increase their ability to gather data, publish findings and apply for competitive independent investigator grants sooner than in the past.
G. Initiation of a rotating President's Professor position that brings senior scholars to the center for a month at a time, significantly increasing our mentoring resources.
Productivity of CANHR investigators has significantly increased. One of our manuscripts was accepted in a high impact journal, Obesity. A special issue of the Journal of Circumpolar Health featured our study, helping establish the center's place among circumpolar health research groups.
