OVERALL COMPONENT: THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER PROJECT SUMMARY / ABSTRACT Since achieving designation as a NCI Cancer Center in 2005 and a NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2015, the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and its Consortium Partner, Lovelace Biomedical/The Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI), have built a single transdisciplinary cancer- focused research enterprise across its catchment area, the State of New Mexico (NM). The distinguishing characteristics of the UNMCCC include: 1) the multiethnic, urban/rural populations that it serves - primarily Hispanic/Latino, non-Hispanic White, American Indian, and Black - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence and mortality, tremendous cancer health disparities, and profound socioeconomic vulnerabilities; 2) deep engagement and unique research and education and training partnerships with American Indian (AI) Nations and Hispanic (H) communities; 3) statewide cancer surveillance, screening registries, and unique tele- mentoring infrastructures that facilitate cancer control research; and 4) a statewide clinical trials network, funded as a Minority/Underserved NCI Community Oncology Research Program, engaging the majority of the state's oncology providers. The UNMCCC mission is to reduce the cancer burden and overcome the tremendous cancer health disparities of the NM catchment area through ground-breaking transdisciplinary research, translation of discoveries to clinical and community interventions, impactful bi-directional community engagement, training of a more diverse cancer workforce, and delivery of exceptional cancer care. With extensive strategic planning and evaluation, the UNMCCC significantly restructured and enhanced its Leadership, 3 Research Programs, 9 Shared Resources, and clinical research infrastructure to assure the Center's continued growth. Since 2015, 33 new Members were recruited and 23 Endowed Positions created. The Center's 102 Members are clustered into 3 interdisciplinary, highly translational Research Programs (Cancer Control & Population Sciences, Cellular & Molecular Oncology, and Cancer Therapeutics), supported by $36,196,038 in annual direct cancer-relevant funding, of which $27,542,340 is peer-reviewed and $8,245,544 is NCI. With $3,009,657 in additional NCI contracts and supplements, total annual NCI funding to the Center is $11,255,201. UNMCCC research is highly interactive and impactful (with collaborative publications ranging from 34-60% in its Research Programs, 16% of 930 publications in high impact journals, 136 patents filed, and 10 new companies launched). Four UNMCCC discoveries were translated to early phase trials, one of which is now a national NCTN NRG trial. Of 1361 accruals in 2019, 40% of interventional treatment accruals were racial/ethnic minorities (29% H; 6% AI), as were 55% of interventional non-treatment accruals (33% H; 12% AI). Among 530 trainees, 72% were minority/diverse scholars. With the awarding of 27 collaborative grants (including a NCI Participant Engagement-Cancer Genome Sequencing Research Center and 3 focused on environmental exposure and cancer causation, all engaging Tribal Nations), the UNMCCC will continue to have a profound impact on its catchment area and the nation.
