INTRODUCTION TO THE REVISED SMALL ANIMAL IMAGING CORE
We thank the reviewers of our initial proposal for a Small Animal Imaging Core (SAIC) for their careful and
considerate critique that included many helpful recommendations for improving the administration and overall
effectiveness of the Core. We were encouraged to hear that the reviewers agreed that, "the Small Animal
Imaging Core is central to the success of the ICMIC application", and that (as expressed by Reviewer 2) "each
Core has excellent facilities and staff to accomplish the tasks at hand." The reviewers clearly appreciated the
aims and abilities of the Core, and that there is a cohesive plan to provide service and expertise to all four
primary projects as well as selected developmental projects. We were also pleased to hear that Reviewer 1
found that our efforts "correlating imaging data with mass spectrometry is wonderful." In our revised
description, we have taken account of all the reviewers' comments and criticisms. Specific concerns about the
care of animals for imaging are also dealt with at length in our revised Section G. Of additional note, since the
original submission, our animal imaging center has become an NCI designated Small Animal Imaging
Resource Program (PI: John Gore), funded for the next 5 years. This award provides additional support,
infrastructure and organization for the animal imaging program and will facilitate the services and
developments required for the ICMIC. As a result we have been able to modify the budget to support additional
capabilities and believe these changes have significantly strengthened our proposal.
