PROJECT SUMMARY / ABSTRACT
This application is for an Administrative Supplement to the University of Michigan (UM) HEAL Initiative National
K12 Clinical Pain Career Development Program (UM-HCPDP), (K12NS130673). This supplement would
facilitate adding 1 additional scholar per year to the existing career development program.
The short-term goal of this administrative supplement is to provide increased opportunities for training within
our existing HEAL National K12 program. The long-term goal is to develop a diverse clinical pain research
workforce that has the skills and content expertise needed to address the existing gaps in clinical pain science.
Our National K12 Program, funded via the HEAL Initiative, began in October of 2022 and seated its first class
of three scholars in June 2023. This first round of applications had far more qualified applicants than could be
accommodated by our existing 3 training slots. In order to keep pace with the demand for better pain care we
need to both expand the number of scientists who are capable and knowledgeable about the complexities of
pain as well as the breadth or diversity of expertise that can be brought to the table to inform novel treatments.
With this supplement we are requesting that 1 additional training slot per year be budgeted for the remaining 4
years of the National HEAL K12 program with special consideration for making this slot applicable to
individuals from institutions that have not historically had large clinical pain research programs. We realize that
since our award is a multiyear funded award, our request will involve the submission of two supplements: the
current supplement - which will fund 1 additional training slot for year 2 of the award, and then a second
supplement to fund the remaining 3 years following the successful submission of our type 4 renewal grant at
the conclusion of year 2.
Impact: The impact of adding 1 additional training slot will expand the clinical pain research workforce as well
as help to diversify the workforce for greater impact.
