The goal of this project is to upgrade the manufacturing process of Saint Jean Carbon, inc (SJC) to develop advanced graphene-based products, including graphene quantum dots with special luminescence properties and reduced graphene oxide nanosheets modified with chemical functional groups. In addition, a protocol of the graphene-based DNA sensor will be designed and developed to quickly detect single-strand DNA sequences. Three major research activities are (1) Development of physical and chemical processes carbon-based nanostructured with special luminescent properties; (2) systematical characterization of the microstructures and photoluminescent properties of engineered carbon-based nanostructures before and after bioconjugation; (3) development of a proof of concept on homogenous DNA sensor for quick detecting low concentration of DNA sequence. SJC will use the results of the collaborative project to upgrade the pilot plant in Oakville, Ontario to scale-up the advanced graphene-based products. In addition, trainees involved in this project will be able to gain solid experience in the development of graphene-based systems with special properties.
