The proposed research program consists of five components: [1] Terahertz (THz) source and detector development for the purpose of [2] exploring a new regime in nonlinear optics [3], exploring new applications of THz science and technology with strong commercialization potential, and expanding my research interests into the areas of [4] laser fusion and [5] warm dense matter research.
[1] This research supports the pan-Canadian THz research group, including supporting graduate students to develop intense THz sources. The availability of new, high-energy THz sources will allow the exploration of new nonlinear interactions, and contribute to maintaining international leadership in this area.
[2] The momentum of the nonlinear THz work will be applied to studying new tools for characterizing the band structure and analyzing the transport kinetics in semiconductor devices. This research will contribute to research projects of high impact and visibility, reinforcing Canadian leadership in this domain.
[3] I have been successful in developing, deploying and testing the first THz scanning system that was operational in a manufacturing facility in the world (an oriented strand board scanner). The research proposed in this application includes enhanced fundamental research in THz-wood interactions so that new applications in composite wood manufacturing and dimensional lumber can be explored and developed. Applications to the bioenergy industry will also be explored, which are possible because of the new bioenergy heating system on the UNBC campus (the most sophisticated bionenergy system on any university campus in Canada) which is designed to have a research component. This research will push the boundaries for technology transfer and commercialization activities related to the wood products industry - one of Canada's largest industrial sectors, and allow us to maintain international leadership in this area.
[4,5] Expanding my research interests into the areas of laser fusion [4] and warm dense matter research [5] link with the other objectives and will enhance the competitiveness of this research program.
