Many construction projects are not systematically monitored, due to the difficulty in gathering reliable information to assess the progress of ongoing construction work. Productivity assessment requires manual data collection, which is carried out by employing observers to collect worker Tool Time and performance information from sites. The quality of such manually collected data is low, due to human errors and limitations in data availability. Several researchers have attempted to solve this problem by automating the monitoring of various aspects of construction projects. However, the industry still lacks a comprehensive solution that can facilitate progress monitoring of a construction project in its entirety. The goal of the proposed research is the development of an automatic, real-time system that can handle this diversity and complexity and can, therefore, provide an optimal solution for the problem of progress monitoring for building construction projects. A real-time system is guaranteed to provide a response within strict time constraints - in the order of minutes or even hours, depending on the needs of an application. The fundamental difference between the proposed approach and all other previous attempts is the acknowledgement that the construction projects are highly complex and that no single technique can gather all the information required for monitoring the productivity of a site throughout its life cycle. Instead, the proposed research will develop a flexible platform within which multiple techniques can be integrated to gather raw productivity information and consolidate such information to generate productivity reports in real time. The proposed research expects to automate the monitoring process with an integrated approach: multiple sensing systems (using videos, range images, etc.) will be developed to monitor progress of work in various construction phases and elements; a software platform will be developed to consolidate progress information extracted by sensing systems; schedules will be retrieved from Building Information Modeling (BIM) to automatically compare actual progress with the schedules and report deviations; and a web-based interface will be developed to provide easy access.
