It presents no more than minimal risk to human subjects, and involves only procedures listed in categories 4 (collection of data through noninvasive procedures), 5 (research involving materials (medical records) that have been collected or will be collected solely for nonresearch purposes, and 7 (research on individual characteristics or behavior including cognitive and motor development). Myelination within the brain is a dynamic process that occurs throughout childhood and adolescence. Strucural neuroimaging studies have shown patterns and rates of global and regional volumetric changes across the life-span. Additionally, diffusion tensor imaging studies (DTI) have reported changes in white matter structure and integrity across the life-span. More recent studies have combined these approaches from a neurodevelopmental perspective to investigate brain-behavior relationships as a function of brain maturation.
