The Treatment Research Center (TRC) Scientific and Administrative Core provides intellectual and
administrative support for the five scientific components. The specific aims of the Scientific and Administrative
Core are: (1) to provide scientific and administrative leadership for the federation of TRC investigators; (2) to
ensure uniform assessment procedures across components to encourage cross component collaboration; (3) to
collaborate with the Quantitative Core to provide cost-based economic analyses, data management and
statistical support for TRC investigators; (4) to provide training support for drug abuse treatment and services
research, including support for NIDA funded institutional postdoctoral trainees, fellows supported by individual
NRSA fellowships, and trainees from other University of California San Francisco (UCSF) programs
conducting drug abuse research; (5) to provide support to develop the scientific skills of junior faculty members
in drug abuse treatment and services research and; (6) to disseminate results from TRC studies and studies from
other sites to the clinical and scientific community, and, through dissemination, contribute to the advancement
of the clinical community and stimulate scientific discourse. The Scientific and Administrative Core includes
seven elements: These are: (1) a core battery which measures important constructs across components and
developmental studies; (2) a series of cross-component integrative studies; (3) training enrichment activities,
including the Writer's Task Force (WTF), implementation of mechanisms to better integrate TRC trainees into
Department of Psychiatry faculty development activities, as well as leadership in a Departmental Research
Retreat focused on the addictions;(4) dissemination of scientific knowledge to the field via forums, through
structured interchanges with community providers and researchers, and through intervention manuals based on
TRC component research; (5) monthly meetings to provide ongoing education into drug abuse research and to
assist component investigators in their formulation and resolution of research issues; (6) grant, manuscript, and
manual review committees; (7) fiscal and administrative support to TRC investigators, as well as investigators
leading affiliated studies, especially junior faculty.
