This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Neurobehavioral research conducted by CPN investigators focuses on the study of brain-behavior relationships using animal models. The CPN's Behavioral Studies Core serves as a central resource to encourage and facilitate the use of animal behavioral techniques to answer significant questions in psychiatric neuroscience. This core further serves as a ready resource for advice and guidance on many aspects of in vivo animal treatment including not only behavioral techniques, but also animal handling, drug-dosing methods, breeding/rearing of animals, surgical techniques, and the development of novel behavioral analyses. The Behavioral Studies Core includes equipment and laboratory space in several CPN laboratories that are specialized for different techniques and/or species of animals for behavioral research. These laboratories have agreed to share their equipment and expertise with other CPN investigators. Although not a "core facility" in the traditional sense of the word, this behavioral equipment and the laboratory space that houses it is a valuable resource that is available to CPN investigators. It allows for the evolution of the research of individual investigators and expansion of their work to include behavioral techniques. In addition, it encourages and supports the development of multidisciplinary collaborative relationships between scientists with behavioral expertise and those who do not share this background. Collaborative efforts are often the key to advancements in research and the CPN's Behavioral Core encourages and supports the development of multidisciplinary collaborative relationships between scientists with behavioral expertise and those who do not share this background. Dr. Paul, the Behavioral Studies Core Leader, facilitates these collaborative efforts with expert advice and assistance to further or expand investigator research by integrating behavioral techniques and analyses. Dr. Paul is a behavioral pharmacologist with expertise in behavioral work with rodents (mice, gerbils, rats) as well as experience with non-human primates. He advises and consults with CPN Project Principal Investigators in the scientific approaches to the study of behavior, the use of behavioral equipment, and the design of behavioral experiments. In addition, Dr. Paul serves as liaison between CPN Project Principal Investigators and investigators with specific behavioral expertise both within and outside the CPN.
