Taking out the Turf an Chinese documents connected with Buddhist temple's economy in the fifth to eighth centuries and analyzing them, this paper is the one that tried to clarify the actual condition of the Buddhist temple's economy in Turf an during the Gaochang and Tang period.First of all, I made the listing about the name of the Buddhist temple in the Turfan Chinese documents. As a result, I was able to know the names of 223 temples. 179 temples existed in Gaochang kingdom and 68 temples existed in Turf an during the Tang period.The Buddhist temple was called "ci 祠" in the Later Man dynasty. In the third century, it has come to be called "si 寺" in the China mainland. However, it was still called "ci 祠" in the late fifth century in the Turf an region. After that, the name of the Buddhist temple changed into "si 寺" from "ci 祠" in the sixth century.When I tried to examine the various ledger and the various contract documents unearthed from Turf an, Buddhist temple and priest were possessing their subordination and the cultivated field in the period of the Gaochang kingdom and the Tang dynasty. Especially, the land management of Buddhist temple and priest in the period of the Gaochang kingdom was being conducted as the same as a layman. Some of the priest did the brewing of wine and usury. So, Gaochang government imposed the tax and corvee to the priest and the temple because of their economic activities.
