The complexity of modern power grids requires using advanced computer-based simulation methods and models for design, operation and post-mortem analysis stages. Numerical models and solution methods are more and more important and play dominant roles in technological advancements in modern power systems in Canada and in the world. This Chair renewal proposes to pursue established research on cutting-edge numerical methods and models capable of reaching new frontiers in computational performance, accuracy and flexibility. The proposed research uses the highest accuracy time-domain basis of electromagnetic transient (EMT) or detailed waveform analysis. A multi-time frame approach is researched. Computational speed and adaptive accuracy are key elements. A distinctive aspect in this Chair project is the fact that comprehensive and wideband algorithms will be delivered for solving complex, practical and large-scale networks from steady-state to transient conditions. This Chair renewal will allow to graduate 16 PhD students and 6 Master's students, in addition to hosting 6 postdoctoral fellows and supporting 2 research associates.The Canadian industrial partners in this Chair are Hydro-Quebec and Opal-RT. In addition to Canadian partners, there are two European partners in this project, namely Électricité de France (EDF) and Réseau de Transport d'Électricité in France (RTE). The goal is to solve problems identified by the industrial partners of this Chair and in related scientific literature. It will be possible to transmit the developed algorithms straightforwardly into industrial grade applications. The Chair will maintain the established research team at Polytechnique Montreal and deliver to the supporting organizations, highly qualified personnel and timely research on power system simulation and analysis methods. The Chair will similarly contribute to Canadian industry in the targeted field of research.
