Origin Materials Canada Polyesters Limited (OMC), is a Canadian entity of Origin Materials based in Sacramento, California. Origin Materials, founded in 2008, is the world's leading carbon-negative materials company with a mission to enable the world's transition to sustainable materials. In 2017, OMC began operating a research and development pilot plant in Sarnia, Ontario, and began construction of a first-of-a-kind demonstration-scale facility (OM1) that will generate thousands of tons of materials. To reduce and solve the emission problems from the creation of materials, any new product must be carbon-negative, flexible enough to transform many industries, and economically sustainable. Origin's carbon-efficient, patented process converts C-6 cellulose in biomass into two major co-products: chloromethyl furfural (CMF) and hydrothermal carbon (HTC). The main objective of this project with Lambton College will provide analytical support to the current and future operations at OMC's pilot plant. The pilot plant has a focus on the research and development of intermediate products such as terephthalic acid (TA) and Furandicarboxylic Acid (FDCA). Origin will produce TA using their proprietary technology, and production of FDCA from TA by Origin is experimental and feedback from the analyses done in this project will heavily support the research and development of this material. The production of high-quality FDCA would allow Origin to bring new material to the market; it can be sold as-is to future clients for use as surfactants and epoxy resins, combined with TA to produce a 100% bio-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET), or it could undergo polymerization to create polyethylene furanoate (PEF). This collaboration will improve data processing time by providing analytical data with a quick turnaround. This data will help inform the various conditions of the chemical reactions. The increased speed of obtaining analytic data will significantly reduce the cost to the company and shorten the timeline for commercialization. Ensuring a high-quality product is being created at both OMC locations will help Origin to attract new clients and secure job creation. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Origin projects to generate $60M USD of revenue in 2023 and $120M USD in revenue in 2024.
