项目摘要
The increasing demand for efficient energy-utilization and more dependency on renewable energy sources calls for a continuous upgrade of the smart grid (SG) in Canada and globally. The concept of SG is enabled by the shared information provided by real-time monitoring and controlling devices distributed across its premises. By leveraging the industrial internet of things (IIoT) to provide better solutions to enhance its operations, the SG can quickly detect and resolve service issues through continuous self-assessment, which increases its efficiency and overall performance. The large-scale deployment and the number of IIoT devices and sensors in the SG necessitate the support of various wireless technology standards such as the Low Power Wide Area Network, and IEEE 802 families. Nevertheless, wireless connectivity in SG environments faces particular implementation challenges, such as the presence of impulsive noise (IN), the inexistence of infrastructure for the noncellular IIoT families, and the massive heterogeneous devices, which hinder its widespread deployment.
The main objective of this project, which is in line with the research strategy of Hydro-Québec, is to design a robust and intelligent IIoT-network paradigm that is resilient to the IN encountered in Hydro-Québec's SG environments and support massive connectivity. To achieve this objective, innovative solutions for IN characterization, receiver-design, random-access channel, and resource management will be explored. In this vein, optimization tools, advanced communication theory, machine learning, and signal processing techniques will be used to propose a novel IIoT-network paradigm that copes with the challenges of the future SG.
The expertise of the applicants and Hydro-Québec researchers in the related fields will be a great asset to the success of this project. This project will have the following benefits to Canada: 1) Providing leading-edge training for graduate students on the most demanded fields of industry 4.0; 2) Contribute to advance knowledge in IIoT for effective operation and control of the SG leading to reduced outages, efficient energy-utilization, and hence reduce the greenhouse effects caused by the power grid.
