Geochemistry is the study of the distribution of elements within Earth (including its atmosphere and waters) and of the chemical, physical and biological processes that govern Earth's composition and evolution. Importantly, geochemistry provides tools for the fundamental understanding of our planet and has numerous applications to the environment, global change, natural resources, human health and natural hazards. This CREATE project integrates leading geochemistry researchers and analytical laboratories across Canada, forming the Multidisciplinary Applied Geochemistry Network (MAGNET). MAGNET will train students and young researchers in the application of geochemistry to specific challenges currently faced by analytical, environmental and resource industries. Three main research themes have been selected: "fragile ecosystems", "hidden resources", and "windows into the Earth". These themes address both 'Environmental Science and Technologies' and 'Natural Resources and Energy' target areas by developing techniques to detect, trace, and mitigate contaminants in the environment, and by promoting research to increase resource exploration in previously under-explored terrains. MAGNET will provide trainees with a comprehensive set of experiences that include 1) high-impact research projects with leading scientists, 2) hands-on training in advanced geochemistry at state-of-the-art facilities, and 3) industry internships with internationally recognized analytical, environmental and mineral exploration companies. MAGNET will function as an integrated and cohesive program via customized activities, such as weekly seminars, skills workshops, university exchanges, annual research symposia, short courses and summer schools. These activities foster increased mobility, extensive industry interaction, and development of key technical and professional skills to prepare graduates for careers with analytical laboratories, environmental consulting firms, water resources development firms, mining and mineral exploration companies, where demand for personnel trained in geochemistry is at an all-time high.
