My research will focus on the ways in which Bohemian identities were negotiated in the post-White Mountain period. It will consider identity-formation not as an isolated and inward-looking debate, but rather as a question with wider consequences in the religious, political, intellectual, and cultural spheres, and as a question that was discussed across Europe. Much of the previously-existing scholarship on identity in this period bears strong marks of the Communist-era ideology, and there have been very few studies of the authors I will focus on since 1989. Moreover, discussions of early modern Bohemian identity have tended to look primarily at textual sources, despite the fact that architecture, ceremonial, and visual depictions were crucial to such debates. Current scholarship has focused on Bohemian statements of what Bohemian-ness could be; yet the Habsburgs, the pan-Habsburg nobility, and scholars and writers from across the continent were also involved in this identity-formation. My research therefore aims to reconceptualise Bohemian identity as a questionthat wasn't insular and purely Bohemian, but rather as a negotiation that had wider implications for Europe as a whole and that sheds light religious, intellectual, and cultural debates of the period.
