PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT:
Increasing efforts to improve early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancers in low resourced countries
have led to modest improvements in cancer survival and given rise to an expanding population of cancer
survivors. However, there is a gap in the understanding of cancer survivorship in low resourced countries. The
goal of this proposal is to measure health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for cancer survivors with Kaposi
sarcoma (KS) and lymphoma across the continuum of cancer care in Malawi. In line with NCI's definition of a
cancer survivor, our survivor population includes any individual diagnosed with cancer from the time of
diagnosis through the balance of life. We hypothesize that: a) KS and lymphoma survivors will have differences
in mental health and physical function domains of HRQoL before (pre-), during (mid-), and up to 1 year after
(post-) cancer-directed treatment; and b) there is no difference in post-treatment HRQoL among short-term (<
1 year since treatment completion), medium-term (≥1-5 years since treatment completion) or long-term (> 5
year since treatment completion) survivors.
