令和元年度は前年度に引き続き、延喜・天暦聖代観について、特に古記録・漢詩文を中心に扱いながら研究を進めた。まずは、古記録で延喜・天暦という時代がどのように現れるのかについて検討した。これは、必ずしも「聖代」という語が冠されていない「延喜」「天暦」についても、広く平安時代の貴族の日記の中に記述を求めて分析するものである。従来の研究では、『小右記』『春記』に見られる延喜・天暦聖代観に関する記述や『本朝文粋』等の分析から、聖代観は現状に不満を持つ文人や貴族層を中心に広まったものと論じられることが多い。しかし、改めて当該期の古記録を検討すると、延喜や天暦を規範とする傾向は11世紀前半の貴族社会に広く認められることが確かめられた。したがって、延喜や天暦が懐古される要因を現状への不満という一面的な理由に求めることについては、再考の余地があると考えるに至った。また『本朝文粋』『江吏部集』に現れる初期の延喜・天暦聖代観を、六国史以前の聖代表現との連続性・断続性に注目して検討した。これは、この二つの漢詩文集を中心に論じられがちであった延喜・天暦聖代観を相対化することを目指したものである。初期の延喜・天暦聖代観のひとつの特徴としては、中国における聖代（堯・舜・周・漢など）としばしば対となって現れる点が注目される。このため、延喜・天暦聖代観は10世紀頃に明確に現れはじめる和漢並立の構造の中で捉え直す必要があるとの見通しを得た。以上より延喜・天暦聖代観は、10世紀末以降の日本において、自国イメージを構成する重要な要素となったことが想定される。本研究の大きな課題である、平安時代における自国・異国（＝和・漢）の構造の理解についても一層精緻なものにすることができた。
