In recent days, a kind of understanding to Japanese ancient history has been growing in the news media: To summarize, Keyhole tomb mounds began to be built in the time of the ancient kingdom, Yamatai-koku, in the mid-third century. This idea might be introduced by an intuitive and non-numerical sense rather than by scientific reasoning. This research project aims at verifying such understanding in a quantitative way of analysis. First, a set of the oldest Keyhole tombs have been selected. Then an attribute value has statistically been extracted from the set. Next, populations of 30 countries in Japanese islands, including Yamatai-koku, appeared in an ancient Chinese document have been listed to compute another attribute value (fractal dimension) of their distribution, assumed to be with the power law. Finally a reasonable result has been obtained both by a quantitative analysis on the above two attribute values and by computer simulations.
