On the first year, to clarify the status of cooperation among multiple care providers involved in community support for the mentally disabled, we performed a semi-structured interview survey and qualitative analysis in a total of 11 subjects consisting of staff members at community workshops those in a community support center, and professionals in a community. This survey clarified the status of their cooperation when the mentally disabled showed aggravation of symptoms , were difficult to manage, or sought employment , and revealed the following needs: 1) a system that allows staff members to consult with professionals about the interpretation of symptoms and behavioral problems in the mentally disabled, 2) strengthening of the network between day-care centers /community support centers and associated medical welfare organizations in the community.Based on these results, we evaluated the status and problems of education/support for staff members involved in care management of the men … More tally disabled and the roles of nurses. Of the staff members in 5 community workshops and 1 community support center in this community, 16 who participated in an exchange meeting sponsored by the health care centerwere entered into this study as subjects. Qualitative analysis was performed based on the transcribed records, and the following results were obtained. The exchange meeting motivated them to share their difficulties and problems and establish inter-institutional network, and hold regular exchange meetings/study meetings, and public health nurses should provide opportunities to staff members for the formation of their own network. In the future, based on this network, a system to provide continuous education/support should be established, and support by interdisciplinary inter-institutional/inter-occupational support such as that by medical welfare educational institutions including nursing universities for the use of community resources may be useful for strengthening the basis of care management of the mentally disabled.
