There are patients who complain bite discomfort without evident occiusal abnormalities, and this is one of the frustrating problems in dentistry. Among the various etiologies of this condition, "occiusal dysesthesia", the abnormalities of occiusal sense might be considered as one of the factors. Therefore, in this study, the thickness discrimination ability in healthy young dentate indivisuals, elderly dentate indivisuals, patients with complete dentures, and occiusal dysesthesia patients. was examined to get the basic information to investigate the feature of "occlusal dysesthesia".The interdental thickness discrimination test was performed at maxillary and mandibular central incisors, canines, premolars and molars with 2-, 5-, and 10-mm thickness standard blocks. The test block, whose thickness was different from the corresponding standard block, was applied after the application of the standard block, then subjects were asked to answer whether the test block was felt thicker or thin … More ner than the standard block. The number of wrong answers was submitted to the data analysis.With regard to theexperiment for twenty healthy dentate young adults, the reproducibility was confirmed. There were statistically significant differences in the number of wrong answers between 2-and 10-mm, and 5-and 10-mm thickness, respectively (P<0,05, ANOVA). Significantly more wrong answers were observed for the test blocks thicker than the standard block, than for those thinner than the standard block (P<0.05, ANOVA). Females reported significantly more wrong answers than males in thinner test blocks for 2-and 5-mm thickness (P<0.01, rigid analysis).More wrong answers were reported for the data obtained at premolar region than that at central incisor region. As forthe elderly participants and complete denture wearers, more wrong answers were reported than the young adults. Regarding occlusal dysesthesia patients, lastly, more wrong answers were reported than the young adults.
