Sarnia-Lambton is historically known for their petrochemical industry. In recent years, there has been a strongand concentrated effort to diversify the industry in the region utilizing the existing capacity and expertise in afew areas including Biotechnology and Information Technology and Communication (ITC). As part of thiseffort, Sarnia-Lambton is strategically positioning itself to build, support and attract ITC start-ups and Smalland Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to the region to form "Sarnia-Lambton Digital Technology and ITCluster". Many regional or newly attracted companies are SMEs lacking R&D capabilities. Lambton College asan only local post-secondary institution is establishing a suite of comprehensive applied research anddevelopment service points that will form the "Information Technology and Communication Research Centre(ITCRC)". The ITCRC's goal is to support the ITC industry with applied research and technologicaldevelopment by providing research facilities and expertise through students and faculty. Lambton Collegethrough ITCRC will collaborate with industrial partners to conduct applied research, technology development,testing, prototyping, and commercialization in various areas including: software development, databasemanagement, smart computing, artificial intelligence algorithms, big data, android and iOS native applications,virtual reality, responsive web applications, parallel & distributed computing, and e-business. ITCRC hasinitially attracted eight projects in partnership with industry and will also benefit from close partnerships withlocal organizations including Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership and Sarnia Lambton Research Park todevelop more projects, bring new and improved technologies to market and consequently generate economicimpact in our community and beyond. ITCRC will also provide an excellent opportunity to educate highlyqualified personnel and enhance 17 IT related programs at the College. The ITCRC initiative will stimulateeconomic development through technology transfer to the partners and will allow the Sarnia-Lambton region toexploit the ITC-industry market.
