项目摘要

Next generation wireless systems (Fifth generation (5G)) are being developed with the vision of heterogeneity in which a mobile user/device will be able to connect to multiple wireless networks. However, since the available bands in each node vary from location to location, and network to network, managing resources becomes particularly challenging in a multi-hop transmission scenario. Resource allocation and network selection in heterogeneous wireless access networks (HWAN), based on the cognitive capability of that network, fast and efficient vertical handoff mechanisms, and provisioning of QoS are some of the major research issues related to the development of HWANs. Pricing mechanisms for packet data services do not consider the interactions among the multiple WANs. A WAN should dynamically adapt the service price offered to another wireless access network based on its revenue and network load, such that it can successfully compete with other wireless access networks. Resource allocation and the construction of the multi-network selection therefore depends on the price offered through the different heterogeneous network domains. The spectrum trading paradigm of cognitive networks imposes additional research challenges of specifying the size and the price of the offered spectrum to maximize the profit of its licensed users while maintaining their QoS and protecting their rights for exclusive usage of spectrum and assuring the QoS for unlicensed users. Virtualization of wired networks being the leading trends, little has been discussed in infrastructure based wireless networks, which is an active area of interest to both the industry and the academia as it has the potential to improve resource utilization and create new services. Virtualized HWAN will provide one possible solution to simplify resource management and spectrum sharing – virtualization at the base station level to support multiple heterogeneous physical and MAC layer standards, virtualization at the network level to optimize the network resource allocations, and cross-domain heterogeneous wireless access network for overall network revenue subject to the QoS constraints in the individual access networks. Therefore, this proposal will attempt to elaborate and address key research challenges and problems related to the design and operation of efficient resource management in the virtualized cognitive radio-based heterogeneous wireless access network, focusing on the real-time traffic demand that requires continuous end-to-end QoS and maximizes profits across multiple heterogeneous network domains. The proposed research will be instrumental in heterogeneous wireless access networks and first of its kind from the service providers’ perspective for optimizing the overall network revenue and supporting QoS-based multimedia applications.
