This Engage project is aimed at probing microscopic magnetic impurities that are present in superconducting thin-film multilayers used as precursors for fabricating quantum processor chips based on rf-SQUID flux qubits. These quantum processors are at the crux of the quantum computing technology produced by D-Wave Systems Inc. This Canadian-founded company is the global leader in commercial development of this disruptively new information technology. Since magnetic impurities produce on-chip flux noise, identifying their location in the multilayers and their origin in the fabrication process will help to improve the manufacturing yield and device performance of the superconducting quantum processor chips.
