CLT is a fairly new engineered wood product that is becoming increasingly popular in the Canadian construction industry. With the introduction of timber mid and high rise buildings engineered wood products, more specifically CLT, will become prevalent as a construction material due to its structural properties, capacity, dimensional stability, and fast installation with minimal waste production. There are currently no provisions in existence that ensure the safety of occupants in such buildings exposed to intentional or accidental blast loading. The purpose of this research project is to investigate the structural contribution of Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) on the behavior of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) slabs when subjected to blast loads. Experimental testing will be conducted in the Structural Laboratory at the University of Ottawa where the Shock Tube will be used and aid in the simulation of a blast load. The experimental program focuses on the dynamic testing which will establish the effect of applying FRP on various properties of the CLT panels. The results of this project would lay the foundation for future research and studies, in addition to potentially establishing code that can be implemented.
