Traffic-related air pollution has a large impact on the health of urban populations. There is sufficient data to conclude that chronic exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with the incidence and mortality from cardiovascular disease, especially ischemic heart disease, and from lung cancer. As well, there is overwhelming data implicating acute exposures to air pollution causing a variety of immediate health effects. There is no escape from air pollution, especially in large urban areas, although there are small-scale variations that depend on traffic and land use. Recent research suggests a strong association between the built environment and physical activity suggesting that compact urban areas contribute to decreased automobile dependency and increased walking and cycling. Indeed, Canadian cities are investing into cycling infrastructure, bike sharing programs, and large campaigns to promote bicycling as an affordable, environmentally friendly alternative transportation mode.
