DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) proposes to offer short-term international health disparities research educational opportunities for Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students. The students will be provided a Summer Institute in which they will receive education regarding: 1) health disparities, 2) the conduct of culturally, ethically, and linguistically relevant research including methodologies, data management, interpretation of results, ethical issues, and 3) a supervised international research experience working in collaboration with UTEP investigators and researchers located in Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua, Mexico. The U.S.-Mexico Border Interdisciplinary Research Training Project (USMBIRTP-the Project) will develop a collaborative relationship between UTEP and Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, (UACJ in Chihuahua, Mexico) researchers that will foster sustainable mechanisms for creating research practicum experiences for Hispanic students interested in Hispanic health. UTEP faculty and the UACJ investigators, as well as other investigators from Ciudad Juarez, have a history of collaboration. The USMBIRTP will mentor students aspiring to be health science researchers through institutional role modeling, scientific working groups, support of institutional research advocates, and support for gaining research competencies. The Project will serve as a catalyst to encourage students to pursue research careers concerning the variables affecting Hispanic health disparities. The mechanism includes the recruitment, selection, and mentoring of potential future researchers using the expert knowledge of a six member Advisory Committee and senior faculty at UTEP. The Project will knit a set of international studies each year of the grant to provide the students the opportunity to participate in research that advances the state of the knowledge about Hispanic health disparities. A team of UTEP faculty will guide the mission of the Project through its administrative core. Two core elements will ensure the success of the Project and carry out the specific aims. Administrative Core and Research Mentoring Core activities will support the recruitment and mentoring of student health researchers aimed at increasing minority health researchers who are prepared to reduce health disparities among Hispanics.
