Biomedical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Clinical Research and Innovation Hub (BIB-CRI) Summary
This proposed alteration/renovation (A&R) component of the Great Plains IDeA Clinical and Translational
Research (GP IDeA-CTR) renewal will create the Biomedical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Clinical
Research and Innovation Hub (BIB-CRI). This renovation is designed to support the growing needs of
biomedical informatics and bioinformatics and interaction space of the GP IDeA-CTR network to meet the GP
IDeA-CTR Overall renewal aims: 1) develop the infrastructure, services, resources, and community
relationships needed to expand CTR; 2) expand professional development activities to cultivate successful
CTR investigators; 3) strengthen collaborative partnerships across GP-IDeA network; and 4) create an
environment that fosters innovative multidisciplinary, multisite, and cross-entity (e.g., public-private)
partnerships. Accordingly, the A&R specific aims are Aim 1: Renovate a floor of Eppley Science Hall to
create the BIB-CRI Hub to expand space for computer-intensive work, Aim 2: Update the infrastructure
needed to support computationally-intensive research, including heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning
(HVAC), Informational Technology (IT), and building security systems, and Aim 3: Enhance collaborations
within and among bioinformatics and CTR teams across the Great Plains-IDeA-CTR, with flexible interaction
spaces, such as ‘huddle rooms’, computational team pods, and landing spaces for visiting regional
researchers. By building the BIB-CRI hub, we will enhance the ability of the Biomedical Informatics (BIBCE)
and the Biostatistics (BERD) Cores to serve informatics and data analytic needs across all GP IDeA-CTR
network partners. The renovation of Eppley Science Hall (ESH) 7th floor provides 7,590 net-square-feet of
useable space for expanding bioinformatics focused research. This space is centrally located at UNMC and will
provide a headquarters for interactions among all GP IDeA-CTR network researchers and clinicians. The BIB-
CRI hub will provide updated cyberinfrastructure to support computationally-intensive analyses and high-
speed data transfer to off-site supercomputers. Computational pods will provide flexible space to support
different team sizes and work-styles. Huddle rooms and other interaction spaces will enhance collaborations,
while dedicated work spaces for visiting GP IDeA-CTR faculty and students will increase collaboration and
facilitate mentoring and learning. This will increase the dissemination of new tools and approaches for
researchers across all GP IDeA-CTR sites. The dedicated BIB-CRI hub built though this renovation will
expand the footprint for computational analysis, enhance computational infrastructure and space to engage in
professional development activities, strengthen relationships across all GP IDeA-CTR partners, boost
collaborative partnerships with the DaCCoTA CTR, reduce duplication of resources, and foster multidisciplinary
collaboration, in service of NIH objectives of enhancing improving biomedical research and health across the
communities we serve.
CRI HUB
