It is known that diagrams simultaneously express information with different specificity and abstractness. We examined eye movements of people who read diagrams in order to determine whether high-abstraction information (called "higher-level information") was actually used in diagram comprehension. We found that it was actually used, and obtained the hypothesis that there is a specific way people control their attention to diagram elements and making such a control easier is a main function of diagrammatic representations as opposed to text-baed information.

众所周知，图表同时以不同的特异性和抽象性表达信息。我们检查了阅读图表的人的眼动动作，以确定在图理解中实际使用了高功能信息（称为“高级信息”）。我们发现它实际上是使用了，并获得了以下假设：人们有一种特定的方式，人们控制着对图元素的注意力，使这样的控制更容易是图形表示的主要功能，而不是文本基本信息。
