本研究は、14-16世紀に英語で書かれた宗教散文文学の一次資料である同時代の写本を研究対象とし、写本の編集方針やそこに残された読者の痕跡を調査し、未刊行資料については校訂テクストや書誌学的記述を整備することで、宗教散文が中世後期の読者によっていかに受容され、また受容を通じてテクストの性質が変容した様を具体的に明らかにした。さらにその結果を応用して、中世後期イギリス文学の諸作品を同時代の書物文化との関わりにおいて個別に分析して、作品のジャンル的特質を明らかにするとともに、文学史的に新たな位置づけをおこなった。

This study focuses on contemporary copies, a primary source of religious prose literature written in English in the 14th and 16th centuries, and investigated the editorial policy of the manuscript and the traces of readers left there, and by preparing proofreading texts and bibliographical descriptions for unpublished materials, it specifically revealed how religious prose was accepted by readers in the late Middle Ages and how the nature of texts had been transformed through acceptance.此外，通过应用结果，我们分析了与当代写作文化有关的中世纪英国文学的作品，揭示了作品的流派品质，并在文学史上创造了新的地位。
