Meteorological and sea-ice studies were carried out on a landfast sea-ice floe at Chaivo Bay, northern Sakhalin during the two winter seasons ; January through March 1993, and December 1993 through March 1994. An experimental site was located on the fast sea ice in Kleye Strait, which links Chaivo Bay to the Sea of Okhotsk. Meteorological parameters such as air, ice and water temperatures, humidity, wind speed and direction, and solar radiation was recorded with a data logger during the ice-covered periods. During the 1994 winter, two testing areas were occupied to examine meteorological and sea-ice features at the experimental site during the ice-covered period by comparing the two different conditions of the surface of the fast sea ice ; one being a snow-covered area and another being a snow-removed area. Additionally, a current meter was deployed at the middle of the strait in December 1993 to monitor the current and tidal regimes through the strait. Furthermore, general meteorological parameters were routinely measured between the two winters at a research station at Chaivo.Measurements of air, ice and oceanic parameters such as air, ice and water temperatures, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and currents were made on an ice station on Saroma-ko Lagoon, Hokkaido during the period from late February through early March 1994, in order to compare those parameters between the two different cases of ice thickness ; one being about 40 cm-thick ice at Saroma-ko Lagoon, and another being about 100 cm-thick ice at Chaivo.
