This proposed 5-year Renewal IRC program will develop advanced and novel physical-layer, medium-access, resource allocation and networking techniques & technologies to enable cost-effective, spectrally-efficient, reliable and continuous communications in challenging dense urban environments to meet the exponential growth of and demand for wireless traffic and connectivity. Its ultimate outcome will be to improve and expand wireless broadband network access, thereby making communications and wireless interactions easier and more efficient across a wider area than ever before.Our industrial partner, Huawei Canada, will play an important role in driving standard advancement in next generation wireless technologies. The development of knowledge and skills for the next generation information and communications technologies is of highest strategic interest to Huawei Canada. The different components of this proposed Renewal IRC program aim to develop new techniques and technologies enabling the emergence of dense and ultra-dense broadband wireless access networks in supporting many human and machine-type applications in various critical application domains including mobile communications, health-care, energy, smart-city and many other industrial sectors. Investing in this proposed Renewal IRC to spur innovation is a vital priority for Huawei Canada, and the program will support their vision for Canada to lead the world in developing and commercializing these technologies.The proposed research will contribute to the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP) in the areas of broadband wireless access communications. The special expertise available at Huawei Canada in the areas of wireless access technology development and lab testing will be particularly valuable to the HQP, providing them with critical and timely information regarding the realistic complex wireless network topology and conditions, and the evolution of wireless proposals and standards. These HQP will be strongly positioned to enter the job market, either as entrepreneurs or in the high-growth field of wireless communications.
