In order to analyze the microscopic morphology and aliphatic hydrocarbon functional groups of biodiesel combustion particulates with different iodine values, instruments such as a high-resolution transmission electron microscope and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer were used to study the average particle size, box-counting dimension, functional group content of biodiesel combustion particulates from a high-pressure common-rail diesel engine using typical raw material biodiesels, as well as the relationships between the average particle size and functional groups and the iodine value of biodiesel. The results show that the average particle sizes of the basic carbon particles of soybean oil biodiesel (SME), palm oil biodiesel (PME), and waste oil biodiesel (WME) particulates are 18.4%, 20.3%, and 27.9% smaller than those of diesel combustion particulates, respectively. Compared with diesel combustion particulates, the box-counting dimension of biodiesel combustion particulates is larger, the structure is more compact, and the agglomeration degree is higher. The contents of aliphatic C - H functional groups on the surfaces of SME, PME, and WME combustion particulates are 6.8%, 11.4%, and 18.2% higher than those of diesel particulates, respectively. The degree of branching on the surfaces of biodiesel particulates is higher than that of diesel particulates, and diesel particulates contain benzene rings with a stable molecular structure. The iodine value has a significant impact on the microscopic morphology and functional groups of biodiesel combustion particulates. The particle size of the basic carbon particles increases with the increase of the iodine value, and the content of aliphatic hydrocarbon functional groups decreases with the increase of the iodine value.
