Ferrates are a kind of water treatment agent integrating multiple functions such as oxidation, disinfection and flocculation, and have broad application prospects. The research progress of ferrates in disinfection is reviewed, including the inactivation characteristics of ferrates on bacteria and viruses and the main factors affecting the disinfection effect, and ferrates are compared in detail with conventional disinfection technologies such as chlorine and ozone in terms of disinfection effect, disinfection mechanism, amount of disinfection by-products generated, etc. Ferrates show good inactivation effects on bacteria and viruses in different water bodies in a wide pH range. pH, temperature and organic matter are important factors affecting the disinfection effect of ferrates. The combination of ferrates and other disinfection technologies will be the focus of future research.
