As a new and rapid material composition analysis technique, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been proven to have great application potential in an increasing number of industrial fields. However, due to the existence of noisy and harsh detection environments in field operations or industrial sites, new and higher requirements have been put forward for the size of instruments and equipment and their ability to resist harsh environments. In recent years, the development of new lasers has further promoted the process of LIBS instrumentation, making it gradually move from the laboratory to industrial applications and also making the LIBS system gradually tend to be instrumented, specialized, and portable. This article reviews the development process of portable LIBS, summarizes and classifies the latest research progress of various laser light sources (small Nd:YAG solid-state lasers, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, microchip lasers, fiber lasers, and fiber energy transmission schemes) applied to portable LIBS systems, discusses the basic problems existing in current portable LIBS, and looks forward to its future development trends.
