In order to better guide the construction and application of energy storage combined with thermal power frequency modulation projects and promote the development of the auxiliary frequency modulation market in southern China, the construction and operation of energy storage combined with frequency modulation projects in China Southern Power Grid are expounded. The frequency modulation benefits of the energy storage system and its impact on the stability of the power grid system are analyzed with emphasis. The main conclusions drawn are as follows: The energy storage system has basically no impact on the shaft torsional vibration mode of the unit, the function of the power system stabilizer, and the primary frequency modulation. After adopting resonance suppression technologies such as repetitive control, the harmonic content of the energy storage can be controlled below 1%. The energy storage combined with frequency modulation can significantly improve the comprehensive frequency modulation performance index and frequency modulation mileage of the unit, increase the compensation income of the frequency modulation mileage, and the economic benefits are considerable.
