The abscisic acid-insensitive 5 (ABI5) plays an important role in the ABA signaling pathway. In Arabidopsis, there are 8 members highly homologous to ABI5, and they are all basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors and are collectively classified as the ABI5 subfamily. Members of the ABI5 subfamily play important roles in plant growth and development processes such as seed maturation, seed germination, flowering time, root growth and stress response. Based on a brief review of the discovery process of the ABI5 subfamily, this article summarizes the research work in recent years on the relationship between the structure and function of the transcription factors encoded by the genes of this family, molecular evolution and genomic distribution, tissue-specific expression and interacting proteins.
