The Terahertz Free Electron Laser facility of the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP THz FEL, CTFEL) is the only high-average-power free electron laser terahertz source operating in China based on a superconducting accelerator. It has the characteristics of continuously tunable frequency online (0.1 - 4.2 THz), high peak power (>0.5 MW), high average power (>10 W), high repetition rate (54.17 MHz), short pulse (~ps), narrow linewidth (~2%), full coherence and linear polarization, etc. Since it produced light in 2017, it has been operating stably for more than four years and many applied experimental studies have been carried out. To further meet the needs of users, the CTFEL plans to be upgraded to an infrared terahertz free electron laser facility, with the electron beam energy increased to a maximum of 50 MeV and the spectral range expanded to 0.1 - 125 THz. At the same time, two experimental stations for material spectroscopy and biomedicine will be built.
