Checkfluid is an Ontario-based manufacturer of oil-sampling valves, which allow for consistent oil samples to be**taken from machinery that can be used for efficient maintenance scheduling. Recently, the company has observed**quality defects in certain products produced mainly by turning. In this project, U. Waterloo and Checkfluid will**collaborate to investigate the production line using advanced diagnostic tools, such that a solid picture of the**production process in terms of quality and efficiency bottlenecks can be drawn. The data to be collected includes,**tool imaging for tool life cycle analysis, measurement of CNC positioning errors using servo signals for the**determination of servo repeatability, laser interferometric measurements of the motion axes according to ISO**standards for the calculation of drive-axis volumetric errors, investigation of thermally generated errors, spindle**power monitoring for the correlation of power consumption with tool condition and quality outcomes, modal**testing for the characterization of the machine-tool vibration signature and the estimation of the static stiffness.**The data thus collected will be analyzed comparatively to come up with process improvement solutions, which will**be tested on the production floor with the help of Checkfluid staff. The findings from the measurements will be**also shared with other research teams working in parallel on process monitoring research. Apart from immediate**solutions related to their production line, Checkfluid will also utilize the knowledge gained from this project to**evaluate various options regarding future investment in process monitoring and automation technologies in the**Industry 4.0 framework.
