The atmosphere over Indonesia surrounded by the warmest sea water warmest in the world is the source of the general circulation and global climatic changes, but observational studies of this region are quite insufficient. The purpose of this field research program is to get ready of the international cooperative observations through discussions with researchers in the U.S.A, and European, and Asian countries.1. On 6-7 March 1990, an international symposium entitled "International Symposium on Equatorial Atmosphere Observations over Indonesia" was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The symposium was partially supported by Indonesian Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPP Teknologi), Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN). Kato, Fukao, Tsuda, Yamanaka, Hirota, Ueda, Sumi, Tanaka, Iwasaka, Takahashi, Yamagata attended the symposium from Japan. Professors Liu (SCOSTEP), Ebel (IAMAP), Geller (STEP), Gage (TOGA), Chanin (IGBP), and Rottger (EISCAT) are invi … More ted to the symposium as representatives of international scientific organizations. Many Indonesians including Prof. Habibie, the State Minister for Science and Technology of Indonesia, attended the symposium to join the discussion.2. In the period from 23 February 1990 to 26 March, Tsuda visited Surabaya, Indonesia to conduct the continuous radiosonde observations. Tsuda launched at most four radiosondes in a day, and observed the atmospheric disturbance in the troposphere and the stratosphere.3. In order to discuss the numerical model of the atmosphere, Yoshizawa and Aso visited NOAA (USA) and Boston Univ., respectively. Drs. Fetzer, Plumb, Boville, and Tung are invited to Kyoto Univ., Kyushu Univ., and Univ. of Tokyo to discuss with Hirota, Uryu, and Sumi.4. Kanzawa and Akiyoshi visited the U.S.A. to investigate the atmospheric radar network which is an important technique to operate the cooperative observations of the equatorial atmosphere. Also, Fukuyama visited England and France, and Fukao and Takami visited Argentina to have discussions on the technical aspects of the atmospheric radar observations. Less
