In order to discover the adult of y-larvae, thecostracan crustaceans associated with various invertebrates from Tanabe Bay were examined. A total of 4 genera and 4 species of ascothoracidans as well as many cirripedians were discovered, but none of them appeared to produce y-larvae. Naupliar larvae of a new ascothoracidan species were individually raised to the ascothoracid stage, and a number of new facts were uncovered.The paraocular process and postocular filamentary tuft were studied with SEM. The former is part of the organ of Bellonci, the latter is part of a prominent gland. The postocular filamentary tuft reduces after the metamorphosis to the cypris y stage.In many species, the nauplius y larvae were successfully raised to the cypris, y stage by individual culture. Development of cephalic shield plates through their naupliar stages was precisely traced. The terminology to describe their cephalic shield plates was established.Many y-larvae were collected from Okinawa, some of them were reared in the laboratory. Most species were apparently distinct from the y-larvae in Tanabe Bay.Although the adult of y-larvae was not found, some important, previously unknown characteristics that were common between the Facetotecta and Ascothoracida were discovered. The pleural slat and the copulatory organ with a bifid apex are these examples. It was concluded that the Facetotecta are either part of the Ascothoracida or a distinct thecostracan group closely related to the Ascothoracida.
