(1) Development of sensors for occlusal force and relative motion of teeth (Esashi, Kuroe, Inoue, Kuwabara) An occlusal force sensor based on a capacitance change and a relative motion sensor based on a magnetic coupling were fabricated by micromachine technology. These sensors were implanted in the artificial teeth for the experiment and the occlusal force and the motion were measured. These sensors were applied for various measurements in dental research.(2) Precise measurement of jaw movement by pattern projection method (Yoshizawa, Kuroe, Inou) We developed a measurement system with the accuracy of 0.1mm at the intermittent rate of 1/60 second and measured three dimensional movement of a jaw when a grown-up man, a child or an infant masticates.(3) Microscopic determination of the specific wear rate of tooth surface (Honda, Mohri) Measurement and analytical method of the tooth wear rate are examined. Using this method, we investigated the enamel distributional characteristics of human molars, and evaluated existing methods based on thickness measures taken on controlled and arbitrary sections.(5) Analysis of the relation between dental wear and three-dimensional cranial structure (Mizoguchi) It was confirmed through multivariate analyses that three-dimensional cranial structure was associated with dental wear and with vertebral morphology.(6) Comparative analysis of tooth wear patterns among hominoids (Uchida) Morphological variation of the mandibular molar in the extant and Miocene hominoids was analyzed.(7) Development of clinical diagnostic test of masticatory function using a tooth-bearing sensor (Ito, Kuroe, Inoue).
